The book is a coming of age story about a woman growing up in the nineteen fifties and sixties and confronting the challenges in her life: living in the shadow of a popular older brother who develops bipolar disorder in his teens, competing with a mother who is very talented, and trying to assert herself with a domineering father who rules the home front.
